The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered a CBI inquiry into alleged illegal constructions in Kolkata.
Acting on a PIL claiming rampant illegal construction of buildings in the city, the court asked the Kolkata Municipal Corporation as to why the civic body did not take any action in this regard.
A division bench presided over by Chief Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge directed the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) to conduct an inquiry into the matter.
The petitioner alleged that there are at least 42 such illegal constructions where the ownership is not established.
The division bench, also comprising Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, asked the CBI to submit a preliminary inquiry report before the court on October 14, when the matter will be heard again.
Claiming that huge sums of unaccounted for money may be involved in such illegal constructions, the petitioner stated that the question of national security was also involved.
The petitioner prayed for a CBI investigation into such illegal constructions.
